In Fiji today, netball is the most popular sport for girls and over the last few years there has been an increase in the number of men and boys playing netball in districts around the country. Netball began in the early 1920s in Fiji. The Fiji Netball body was established in 1963, informally at first, and then formally over the following years to facilitate its representation to the 1963 inaugural South Pacific Games hosted in Fiji and where the national team won gold. Fiji’s first representation at the Netball World Cup followed through in 1975. Currently Fiji Women’s team is ranked 14th in the world but has been as high as 7th in 2016.
Fijians are famously friendly and the national rugby teams true ambassadors of the Bula Spirit. The Men’s Sevens Rugby team recently won Fiji another Olympic Gold Medal at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games & a Silver at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024. The Women’s ‘Fijiana’ team stunned with a Bronze medal win of their own in 2020. Fiji played against Australia on the 18th of September 2023 at the RWC and it was a historic match for the team as Fiji beat Australia 22-15 and this was Fiji’s first ever victory over Australia since 1954. Fiji may have only made the knockout stages twice in their history, but they have lit up every Rugby World Cup they have competed in.
