Sport in South Africa has and always will unite people from every walk of life. Who will forget that momentous occasion in 1995 when South Africa won the Rugby World Cup? When it comes to sport, South Africans are extremely passionate. Football is the most popular sport in the country, with Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates firmly the fans’ favourites, and the national team, Bafana Bafana, being enthusiastically supported by its many supporters. Rugby is also immensely popular, and the Springboks are the pride of the nation, having brought home the Rugby World Cup (1995 and 2007) and the Tri-Nations (1998, 2004 and 2009). Stadiums like Ellis Park and Loftus Versveld are some of the most impressive in the world.

The Rainbow Nation’s ‘Mother City’, Cape Town, rests between the iconic backdrop of Table Mountain and the country’s most visited tourist attraction, The V&A Waterfront. For those after some warmer weather and some impressive game drive opportunities, a visit to Kwazulu Natal is a great addition to any sports tour. The largest city in the region is Durban, one of the main tourist cities in South Africa, and blessed with a subtropical climate year round and some fantastic beaches. It is also a gateway to some of the country’s national parks, including the Oribi Gorge, The valley of a thousand hills, and South Africa’s oldest game park – Umfolozi. Groups will always have the chance to experience a Game Drive, and stay at one of the spectacular game reserves that South Africa is famous for.
If you’re lucky, you may get the chance to see a live sports fixture, whether it’s one of the regional Super 15 sides, a Diamond Challenge netball fixture, or even the Springboks in action in the Rugby Championship.
